Helping an Active Young Dog Feel Comfortable Again

Meet Bhaer, an active young golden retriever owned by Pine Creek Veterinary Associates veterinary technician Rachael Baust. Like many dogs, especially floppy-eared breeds, Bhaer developed a significant buildup of earwax that needed a closer look.

Ear issues are common in dogs and can sometimes be easy to miss at first. Some pets may shake their heads, scratch at their ears, have odor or discharge, or seem sensitive when their ears are touched. In other cases, buildup can develop gradually before symptoms become obvious.

To better evaluate what was happening inside Bhaer’s ears, Dr. Zerwig used a scope to carefully examine the ear canal. This allowed him to see deeper into the ear than a standard visual exam and assess the extent of the wax buildup. Once the area was evaluated, Bhaer’s ears were thoroughly flushed to remove the excess debris and help restore comfort.

Ear scoping (otoscopy) and flushing can be especially helpful when pets have heavy wax buildup, chronic ear issues, or suspected infections. The procedure allows the veterinary team to clean the ear more effectively, better visualize the ear canal, and create a treatment plan based on what is actually happening below the surface.

Bhaer did great during his procedure and is now feeling much more comfortable. His case is a good reminder that ear health is an important part of overall wellness, especially for dogs who love to stay active, swim, hike, or spend lots of time outdoors.

If your dog is shaking their head, scratching their ears, has an odor, or seems uncomfortable, don’t wait. Our team can help determine whether your pet needs an ear exam, medication, cleaning, or a deeper look with advanced tools like ear scoping.
