How Endoscopy Helped Solve a Mystery

When Bruce, a playful 3-year-old yellow Labrador, began experiencing intermittent vomiting over several months, his family knew something wasn’t right. The vomiting came and went, and initially, there were no obvious signs of illness—just a normally active pup with a sensitive stomach.

But as the symptoms continued, Bruce’s family brought him to Pine Creek Veterinary Associates for a deeper look. What followed is a perfect example of how advanced diagnostic tools like endoscopy can uncover hidden issues that aren’t always visible through routine exams.

The Diagnostic Journey

Our team began with a full physical exam and an abdominal ultrasound, which offered a general view of Bruce’s internal organs. While the ultrasound gave us some important clues, it couldn’t clearly identify what was causing his ongoing discomfort.

That’s when we recommended an endoscopy, a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small, flexible camera to view the inside of the stomach and upper digestive tract in real time.

The Surprising Discovery

During Bruce’s endoscopy, we found something unexpected: a piece of a dog toy lodged deep in his stomach. While he was still acting mostly like himself, this foreign object had likely been there for weeks or even months, contributing to his chronic vomiting and irritation.

In some cases, foreign bodies can be removed endoscopically, but Bruce’s object required surgical intervention. Our team performed a safe, successful surgery to remove the toy fragment, and just like that, Bruce was on the road to recovery.

Why Endoscopy Matters in Veterinary Medicine

Endoscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool that helps us evaluate the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestines without requiring major surgery. It’s especially useful in cases like Bruce’s, where the problem isn’t visible on the outside and imaging alone doesn’t provide a complete answer.

Benefits of endoscopy include:

  • Minimally invasive
  • Less pain and faster recovery than exploratory surgery
  • Ability to diagnose chronic vomiting, diarrhea, or weight loss
  • Useful for identifying ulcers, tumors, inflammation, and foreign bodies

Bruce’s Outcome

Thanks to this technology, and his family’s dedication to his health, Bruce is back to doing what Labs do best: playing, fetching, and loving life. He’s now fully recovered, with no signs of the stomach issues that brought him in.

(And we hear his toy collection is now on lockdown.)
